Michael's Gate, Old City, Bratislava

Michael's Gate is the only survivor of the four original gates in Bratislava's town walls. It was named after the nearby suburban settlement and Church of St. Michael. The tower was built in the late 14th century. It formerly had a drawbridge, portcullis and heavy wooden doors. It took on its present Baroque appearance during renovations in 1753–1758, when a statue of St. Michael by Bratislava craftsman Peter Eller was added. It is now 51 meters high.
