Franciscan Church, Old City, Bratislava

The Franciscan church was dedicated to the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary in 1297. King Andrew III attended its consecration. It was built as a simple single-nave Gothic church. After an earthquake in 1590, its collapsed Gothic vault was replaced with a Renaissance one. The oldest surviving parts are the original Gothic presbytery and the side walls of the nave. In the adjoining Franciscan monastery, Ferdinand I was elected the first Habsburg king of Hungary in 1526.
