Town Hall, Historic Centre, Žilina

The town hall first appears in town records in 1479 as the house of Žilina's mayor, or reeve, Peter Pollák. King Matthias Corvinus (1458–1490) resolved a dispute over the house between the hereditary reeve and the townspeople by ordering Blažej Podmanický, the hereditary reeve, to return it to them. The town acquired it definitively only in 1509 from Ján Podmanický, owner of the Strečno estate. The town hall has three construction phases. Cellars beneath its front section survive from the medieval phase, and cellars beneath the arcades from the Renaissance phase. After the upper parts were demolished in 1893, the former burgher house was rebuilt into today's town hall for ceremonial use and offices. Repairs in 1992–1993 gave it its current appearance. It contains ceremonial rooms for council meetings, weddings and other events, as well as the mayor's office. A plaque commemorates the charter Privilegium for Žilina's Slovaks.
