Church of the Holy Trinity, Historic Centre, Žilina

The most important and oldest building on Horný val Street is the Roman Catholic parish Church of the Holy Trinity. A castle probably stood nearby, partly on the site of today's church, from the 13th century; written records mention it between 1318 and 1454. The church's single nave ends in a semicircular apse to the east and a 51-meter tower to the west. A Chapel of St. John of Nepomuk with his statue was added on the west side in 1762. The last major rebuilding was in 1942–1943. Originally Gothic, the three-aisled church acquired a Renaissance character after reconstruction. Close to the church stands the 46-meter Burian Tower, a Renaissance bell tower built around 1530 by Žilina's then owner, Burian Světlovský of Vlčnov. It acquired its present character during alterations to the Roman Catholic church in 1890; a new observation walkway was built in 1941.
