Grand Bio Universum, Historic Centre, Žilina

The Fatra Arts House is a landmark on Jozef Vurum Street. The Art Nouveau building opened in 1921 as a cinema and theatre called Grand Bio Universum. On 21 November 1921, it hosted the premiere of Jánošík, the first Slovak feature film. After nationalization in 1945, the cinema was renamed Fatra. In 1983–1988, the building was renovated and extended for the State Chamber Orchestra, which often works with leading artists from around the world and the Žilina Mixed Choir. Two plaques on the facade recall key events in its history.
