Piarist Church of St. Francis Xavier, Historic Centre, Trenčín

The church, originally Jesuit and later Piarist, was built in the early Baroque style between 1653 and 1657. Its layout and two-towered façade follow the Central European Jesuit church type, modelled on the Church of St. Francis Xavier in Vienna. The interior acquired its present Baroque character during restoration after the town fire of 1708; the work continued until 1713. The ceiling paintings of 1711–1713 are among the most remarkable Baroque illusionistic murals in Slovakia. They, as well as the painting on the main altar, are the work of painter and architect Krištof Tausch. A monastery building was added to the church between 1653 and 1662. After the suppression of the Jesuit order in 1773, both the church and monastery passed to the Piarists.
