Renaissance Belfry, Strážky, Spišská Belá

The Renaissance bell tower, the Late Gothic Church of St. Anne and a Renaissance manor house form an important group of national cultural monuments. A typical example of its kind, the tower retains fragments of rich ornament made using reverse sgraffito. This masonry block with a square plan was built in the late 16th or early 17th century; its sgraffito decoration dates from 1629. The artist signed with the initials H. B. in the inscription “Soli deo HB 1629 Gloria.” It appears on the south side above three sound openings and a band of elaborate scrolling foliage. Rustication decorates the corners. The small gables of its parapet are more delicate than those in Spišská Belá and bear sgraffito. On the first floor, a wooden stairway leads through a small stone portal aligned with the first window from the right. On the same axis at ground level is another entrance through a plain stone portal with a pointed arch. The bell tower, in the grounds of St. Anne's Church, was built by Ulrich Meterer.
