Upper Gate with Barbican, Historic Centre, Bardejov

The Upper Gate on the south side of town stands where a castle once protected a medieval customs station that collected the thirtieth tax. In 1770, the wooden drawbridge between the gate tower and barbican was replaced by a stone bridge with five arches. The remains of the barbican include reinforced water-filled moats, the southwestern section of its curved wall, a southeastern wall section in a house's foundations, and part of the arch leading to the bridge across the moat.
