City Bell Tower, City Attractions, Ilava

Ilava's town bell tower originally had one upper floor and a 7 × 7 meter square plan. It was probably commissioned by the Ostrožič family. A major fire in 1622 damaged it and melted all its bells. The people of Ilava bought a new bell in 1625, and the Ostrožič family donated others. Another fire in 1695 destroyed the roof, but the bells survived. In 1758 the tower underwent an expensive Baroque reconstruction. Funds from Andrej Najzer, a priest, University of Vienna graduate and doctor of philosophy, paid for a second upper floor with a bulbous Baroque roof. After another fire damaged that ornate roof at the end of the 19th century, it was replaced by the simple pyramidal roof still seen today.
